Identifying a gemstone is a process of elimination: you start with everything a stone could be and narrow the suspects down by reading a handful of observable clues. The good news is that the first few clues require nothing but your eyes and good light, which is exactly why a clear photo can already get you most of the way to an answer. Color alone is rarely conclusive, because many gems share a hue, but it instantly shortens the list of candidates.

Composite stones such as doublets and triplets show a flat join line when viewed from the side, a common trick used to fake opal and emerald.

Refractive index, measured with a refractometer, is considered the single most useful datapoint because each species refracts light by a characteristic amount. How to Photograph a Gemstone for Accurate Identification
A good photo is the difference between a confident identification and a guess. The single most important factor is light: use bright, natural, diffused daylight near a window, and avoid direct sun, which blows out color, and indoor bulbs, which cast yellow or blue tints. Never use your phone's flash — it flattens the stone, hides inclusions and creates harsh hotspots. If the gem looks too dark, move closer to the light source rather than reaching for the flash.
Place the gemstone on a plain, neutral background — a sheet of white or mid-gray paper works well — so nothing competes with the stone's true color. Wipe the gem clean of fingerprints and dust first, because smudges read as inclusions to both the eye and the AI. Fill the frame with the stone so its color, transparency and surface texture are clearly visible, and tap to focus before you shoot.
